Many families find seafood to be the most challenging dinner to prepare. While dishes from Alaskan Harvest Seafood can often be more challenging than your average dinner, the quality difference between premium seafood and other dishes is almost indescribable. However, I often hear parents say that their kids don’t like fish. Well, I’m here to tell you to not give up! And to share with you some of our favorite seafood dinner recipes.
Preparing tasty seafood is really quite simple, but it does require close attention to the cooking process. You want to pay close attention while cooking fish so that you don’t overcook it. Whether it’s too high heat or too long of a cooking duration, it’s easy to overcook seafood, leaving you with a not so tasty meal and perhaps choosing meat or chicken instead next time.
You also want to be sure to start out with fresh fish. I usually cook fish the same day that I buy it. You can also ask at the seafood counter when they got it in. If it’s really fresh it will last a day in the refrigerator. The fish should look shiny and should not be smelly.
Having a Swedish, fish and potato loving mom, I grew up eating a lot of fish myself. And fortunately, it seems to be a food that my kids really like too–especially cod and salmon.
Below are 5 of our go-to seafood recipes. In addition to these, I often serve plain style seafood with a dollop of homemade pesto sauce, fresh herbs, or even just a slice of lemon!
This is the most cooked salmon dinner in our house, I probably make it every other week because it’s so quick and the kids love it. I usually buy wild salmon, but when wild isn’t available I get the organic, sustainably farmed salmon (the kids like that even more).
You can make this with haddock or cod. It’s hard not to like a fish that is topped with homemade breadcrumbs sauteed with butter and garlic. You can leave out the parsley or parmesan if you have green or cheese averse family members. Just be careful not to overcook!
This is a fun change up from my usual Scandinavian-style fish. The ginger adds a nice kick and while it does require some time to marinate, you can get by with just 30 minutes. Serve this with some coconut rice and lightly steamed or sauteed veggies. Yum!
If your kids like “fish sticks” this is your next step towards homemade fish. Basically breaded fish, the little nugget shaped panko coated pieces of fresh fish are hard to resist.
This is a great dinner because everyone loves pasta. So even if you have someone who isn’t a seafood fan yet, at least, they will get some pasta and veggies in their bellies! It’s also very versatile, you can switch up the veggies and make it with what you have on hand. I usually buy frozen, wild shrimp and keep it on hand for quick weeknight dinners such as this one.

I recently made this recipe for the first time, and my husband and I loved it! My older son also liked it, and my younger son, well, hopefully, he will taste it next time! It’s a healthy spin on creamy fish soups and chowders and you could easily add some pre-cooked, chopped veggies or potatoes to make it more of a complete meal. We served it with fresh sourdough bread and crisp rye bread. Delicious!
