One of the fan favorite recipes on this site is my Homemade Granola. My family refers to it as “Hälsa ‘Nola” and it’s perfect for hearty morning breakfasts and bringing as a hostess gift. But I have also had some requests for granola that is even lower in saturated fat and sugar.
So in response to these requests–and my own desire to mix up some new versions of granola, I got testing. It didn’t take that many batches to come up with this recipe, which must be pretty good because we keep running out of it!This heart-healthy Cardamom Hemp Granola is perfect for weekday breakfasts! This recipe features hemp hearts, which are hulled hemp seeds. Hemp hearts are a nutrient powerhouse, packed with fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. I keep them on hand to add to everything from smoothie bowls to avocado toast to salads. I also love to add them to my cocoa-coconut bliss balls instead of nuts.
Because it’s lower in added oil and sugar, this granola doesn’t form big clusters like many granola recipes do. So while it may not be the best “eat right out of the container” type snack, it’s perfect for sprinkling on everything from kefir to yogurt to smoothies to nut butter toast. (So if you are trying to cut down on mindless granola snacking, this recipe is for you, haha!)
One more reason to make this recipe? Your house will smell like a bakery for several hours. So. Good.
Healthy Cardamom Hemp Granola
- 2 cups old-fashioned oats certified gluten-free if needed
- 1/2 cup raw almonds, chopped
- 1/3 cup hemp hearts
- 2 tablespoons chia seeds
- 2 teaspoons ground cardamom
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch salt
- 3 tablespoons maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons avocado, grapeseed, or olive oil
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Preheat oven to 280 degrees F and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine oats through salt and mix with a wooden spoon.
- In a small prep bowl, combine maple syrup, oil, and vanilla extract. Add to the oat mixture and stir until well combined.
- Transfer oat mixture to the baking sheet. Spread out evenly and then bake in the oven for about 35 minutes, until golden brown and fragrant.
- Let cool and then transfer to an airtight container. Enjoy!
