The other night I awoke soon after falling asleep only to realize my tummy was not happy. Too heavy of a dinner had left me with a case of indigestion. Rather than just laying there and waiting for it to feel better, I got up and made myself a cup of fresh ginger tea.

Within the hour, I was feeling much better, and as a bonus, my sinuses were cleared up too!
Ginger root has long been known to have medicinal properties. Its many benefits may include:

  • As a digestive aid (relief of morning sickness, nausea, upset stomach, gas)
  • As an anti-inflammatory (relief of arthritis symptoms as well as other chronic inflammation)
  • Providing relief for upper respiratory infections (cough, stuffy nose, sore throat)

Some research also suggests ginger has antiviral and antibacterial properties, making it a great addition to your immune-boosting regime. (Read more about other immune-boosting foods and herbs here.)

Ginger tea is simple to make and you can make it as potent as you like. All you need is fresh ginger root, which is available at most health food stores, Asian markets, and many conventional food stores too. I usually use a vegetable peeler to trim away the outer skin and then peel off  several pieces to make the tea. Then you simply add hot water and let it steep for five minutes or so while you inhale the therapeutic steam. (And try to be patient and so that you don’t burn your tongue!) I like to add a teaspoon of honey. It’s also nice with lemon.
